"BOOT THE FOOT" #33: MICHAEL SHANTZ VS. "RAPHAEL" (in his black wrestling costume)!
NOTE:  Raphael donned a black full-body wrestling costume when he and the other turtles were kidnapped and forced to be a part of an intergalactic wrestling league as part of a storyline in the TMNT comic series from ARCHIE COMICS.  After the adventure concluded, he continued to wear the outfit back on earth for quite a while, as he had taken a liking to it.
SKUMMBEAST:  How would you describe your art style and what influences have helped shape that style?
SHANTZ:  I think my style stems directly from the original influences such as Japanese woodblocks prints (and pretty much anything to do with japan in general), Tim Burtons original stories and drawings, Adam Warren (Dirty Pair, Gen13), Joe Maduriera (xmen, Battle Chasers) and Picasso. I grew up with an artist family and had a foot in the art door, so to speak, since i was a kid, and was introduced to a lot of influences i wouldnt have seen if my parents and little brother wernt all doing art along side me.
SKUMMBEAST:  Share a bit about your history with TMNT, and tell a bit about why you chose this character and decided to interpret it this way.
SHANTZ:  I had every single TMNT toy, and watched the tv show religiously, as well as collected the comics when they started getting really bizzare with galactic cows and wierd black suit Raph. I think the re design was perfect for Raphs badass attitude, he always wanted to stand out i think.
With my illustration i just wanted to capture that same attitude.
SKUMMBEAST:  Which was your favourite of the four Turtles?
SHANTZ: Obviously Mike…. hahaha gnarly pizza eating smart ass…. he was basically my mirror image as a kid. I was a lil nuts.
